DON'T PUT ALL OF YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET

You may have heard that statement recently when companies went bankrupt.  Employees not only lost there jobs, but their 401K or other retirement plans that were invested soley in their employers stock.  They were totally dependent financially on their employer.  As a result, they were unemployed and lost all of their retirement savings.

Many people do not realize they should think about their life insurance they have with their employer in the same way even if there is no problem with their employer closing it's doors..  Life insurance through your employer can be a very nice benefit.  Many times the employer provides life insurance free or at a substantialy reduce price. However, when reviewing your insurance needs,  there are
addditional considerations:

1. Do you loose that benefit if you quit, are laid off or retire?  Unless you are sure you will die during your working years for your employer, you need  permanent insurance that will be there to pay final expenses and other needs whether you are 35, 65 or 85
2. Some people feel they can pay final expenses from their investments if they need to.  Life insurance guarentees an amount of death benefit paid (tax free) from the day you buy it until the day you die. The payout from stocks, mutual funds etc., depends on the selling price the day you take out the money and if is more than you invested, be sure to allow something for capital gains tax.  In addition, many times those investments were being counted on for the retirement years for yourself and your spouse.
3. Your employer may reduce or eliminate your life insurance as a benefit just like it is happening with health insurance.
4. If your life insurance is reduced by your existing employer or you change jobs and have less or no coverage,  can you qualify from a
medical standpoint to buy life insurance on your own at that time?
5.  Even if you can qualify for insurance 10 or 20 years from now,  how much more will it cost you simply because of your age?  A permanent plan life insurance stays level, as long as you own it, regardless of age.  After a number of years, the dividends can pay the premium for you and you still have your life insurance.  If you start early enough you can avoid paying the premiums in your retirement years when you are on a reduced income.

It is good to utilize the life insurance benefit from your employer, especially for short term needs, but "don't put all of your eggs in one basket."  Be sure to have some life insurance of your own now, when you know you can qualify, be a lower price than anytime in the future, have a locked in rate forever, receive the death benefit tax free and is there for you no matter who is your employer or if you are laid off or retired. Your future starts tomorrow.  Contact me today.
